Hillsborough High School is a four-year comprehensive public high school that serves students from Hillsborough Township in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States, operating as part of the Hillsborough Township School District. Students from Millstone attend the school as part of a sending/receiving relationship.[3]

As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,383 students and 157 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 15.18.[2]

Contents

Awards and recognition

The school was the 81st-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 322 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2010 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools", after being ranked 84th in 2008 out of 316 schools.[4] The school was ranked 100th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which included 316 schools across the state.[5]

In 2010, 20.7% of students in grades 11 and 12 participated in Advanced Placement classes. The school graduated 98.6% of its senior class. [6]

Alumni of Hillsborough High School regularly matriculate at the nation's top ranked universities including Northwestern, Harvard, Princeton, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Duke, Cornell, Brown, Smith College, Johns Hopkins, Tufts, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, and Georgetown. Graduates have later gone on to prestigious graduate programs including PhD programs at Princeton, Harvard, and University of Chicago; MBA and Masters programs at Oxford University, Columbia and Harvard; and law school at Harvard and Columbia.

Clubs

Hillsborough High School has 74 different clubs and activities. Of course students can make a new club with a faculty member and the administration’s approval.

Marching Band

Under the direction of Jules Haran, HHS Raider Marching Band took the title of 2010 Group V Open Northern State Champion with a score of 97.175 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In 2006, at the USSBA National Championships at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland, Hillsborough High School was recognized as Best Color Guard National Championship title in Class IV.[7] Also in 2006 at USSBA-hosted State Championships at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, Hillsborough High School took the title of Group IV Open State Champs for the fourth consecutive year.

Debate Club

One of the most popular and successful clubs at the school is Model United Nations and Model Congress, collectively known as HHS Debate. HHS Debate regularly wins delegation awards and many individual awards at conferences all across the country. In 2008, HHS Debate picked up the Best Delegation Award from Duke Model United Nations, with every individual member of the team winning an individual award. In 2009, the team won Best Delegation at Virginia Model United Nations. At Hillsborough's flagship conference, Rutgers Model Congress, the team has won a first or second place delegation award for nine out of the past ten years.

Robotics

In 2007, the robotics team of Hillsborough High school helped pass legislation through the New Jersey Senate recognizing FIRST. This dedicated the week of February 26 through March 3 of 2007 to FIRST in an effort to support science, technology, as well as all the participants at FIRST. The robotics team, known formally as Team 75, has continuously worked with NJ legislature to support recognition for science and technology, and is the oldest active FIRST team in New Jersey. The team also won the 2007 Chesapeake Regional and the 2007 Chairman's Award at the NJ Regional.[8]

Athletics

Hillsborough High School competes in the Skyland Conference, which includes public and parochial high schools covering Hunterdon County, Somerset County and Warren County in west Central Jersey, operating under the supervision of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.[9]

The boys swimming team won the 2007 Central - A state championship with a 103-67 win against Montgomery High School.[10]

The boys baseball team won the Somerset County Championship, the Central Jersey Group 4 Sectional Final, and the Group 4 Finals in 2005.[11]

In 2008, Mary Kate Lynch was honored at the Annual Scholar Athlete Luncheon for Hillsborough High School [12]

In 2009, David Wilson broke his own school record (21.05) for the 50 freestyle to win the individual State Championship and claim the title of “the fastest man in the state.” Also at the Meet of Champions, Wilson earned All-American status for the butterfly 200 medley relay. Wilson won two more titles during his senior year, the 50 free and 100 fly at Somerset County and Skyland Conference meets.[13]

In 2009, Steven Wu won Somerset County Boys Tennis Championship. He was also a tennis court namesake in 2011.

In 2009, Zachary Schiffman won the Somerset County Golf Tournament individually, being the first Raider to do so since Todd Bourke in 1992.

In 2009, Gina Li became the first tennis player from Hillsborough to be named First Team All-State while making it all the way to the semi-finals of the state championship.

The Rugby Team competes in a competitive league with schools such as Delbarton School, Xavier High School, and Darien High School.

In 2009, the Girls Cross Country team won overall State Champion by defeating Randolph High School by a single point to win the Meet of Champions in Holmdel. In 2010, the Girls Cross Country Team won the Group IV state title and was the overall State Champion again by winning the Meet of Champions by a wide margin over Voorhees, earning the team recognition by The Star-Ledger as its team of the year.[14]

In 2010, Sushanth Kodali was State High Jump Champion.

Suicide rate

The Board of Education is beginning an inquiry into the high number of suicides in Hillsborough High School. From 2006-2011, at least one member of each graduating class has committed suicide. As a result, the board is increasing funding for counseling.

Graduation requirements

New Jersey State law requires that every student pass the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) and successfully complete the following courses:

All students must carry at least 25 credits to be promoted to the next grade level.[15] These graduation requirements only apply to students currently in 10th-12th grade.

Beginning with this year’s incoming freshman, the graduating class of 2012, there is a change in the graduation requirements. The changes are listed in the chart below.[16]
